was the very first dog I owned on my own. We had quite a few family dogs but Duff
was mine. Not long after I moved away from home and into my own place, I bought him from a
pet shop when he was about 6 weeks of age. He was a small bundle of wiry hair and though I
was never sure what breed he was I'm sure there must have been terrier in there somewhere. He was my best friend, always there when I needed him and just so smart. He learned all sorts of tricks in minutes and never tired of playing ball. He loved the water and when we moved to Terrigal, we would take him for walks on the beach and he would always finish up swimming way out into the surf. It used to worry me at first but I soon realised he knew what he was doing. His favourite game was retrieving sticks or a ball that we threw as far as we could into the water.

Once he decided to leap into the water from a 20' cliff we were walking along , a nice young man jumped in to rescue him. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was something Duff did reguarly. When we got Lucy our first Beagle in 1983, he fell in love with her, as did we! He was there as stepdad to her first litter. We always wondered what puppies from the two of them would have looked like but as he had been "tutored", we would never know! Most likely they would have been gorgeous. I was devastated to lose him in 1985. It was like losing a part of me but he still lives on in my memories. Sleep well, Duff |
